Happy New Year!

I hope 2005 brings you all much joy and the world more peace.

As one tiny contribution to both those goals, on the evening of Wednesday,
February 9, 2005, I¹ll be hosting a Happy Hour and Silent Auction to benefit
the Upper Midwest Affiliate of PeaceJam International, a great organization
devoted to developing the next generation of peacemakers. PeaceJam
activities are grounded in four commitments for peace: peace within,
peacemaking skills, social justice, and civic dialogue. In March, Rigoberta
Menchu Tum will come to the PeaceJam event in St. Paul, which will focus on
the theme she chose, ³Healing Communities Torn by Racism and Violence.²
(See the attachment for more details.) It¹s very exciting work, and so far
it has all been done by volunteers. Funds raised from the silent auction
will provide scholarships for young people who might not otherwise be able
to participate and will help cover the costs of the next Day of Peace at Red
Wing Correctional Facility.

You are hereby invited to donate an item for the silent auction and/or to
join the fun and bid on items in the silent auction.

To donate something for the silent auction, please let me know what the item
is and what amount you¹d suggest as a starting bid. Feel free to think
creatively ? you can donate an object (such as a basket of handmade soap or
a Chinese batik wall-hanging), a service (such as three hours of babysitting
or a catered dinner for four), or whatever you can imagine. If possible,
please contact me about donations no later than January 18th.

To attend the open house and bid on items, simply show up at 2908 37th Ave.
S. in Minneapolis sometime between 5:30 and 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, February
9, 2005. Bidding will end at 8:00 p.m. See below for directions.

Note: I also aim to send an email out with a comprehensive list of the
items up for auction, including photos when appropriate, so that people
unable to attend the open house can submit bids (to me at
julieplaut [at] mncampuscompact.org) before noon on February 9th. Look for that
early in February.

Meanwhile, please feel free to contact me if you have any questions ? or if
you have an item to donate! ? and please pass this invitation on to others
who might be interested. We will have a wonderful variety of items for
auction, including all the items mentioned as examples above, plus a
delicious array of appetizers and other treats, so I hope to see you on the
9th.

Peace,
Julie

Directions: 2908 37th Ave. S. is one block north of Lake St., one block
south of Brackett Park, in the Longfellow neighborhood of Minneapolis. If
you take public transportation, the 21 bus will drop you off at Lake St. and
36th Ave. S., less than two blocks away; you can also transfer to this bus
just outside the Lake St. light rail station. If you drive on I-94, it's
easiest to take the Cretin/Vandalia exit, turn south on Cretin, then turn
right at the first stoplight (Marshall, which becomes Lake St. once you go
over the bridge), and turn right onto 37th Ave. #2908 is a white house with
a porch, on your left, the third house south of the corner with 29th St.
The phone number is 612-721-4918.
